“The Neddiad” – Daniel Pinkwater

“The Neddiad: How Neddie Took the Train, Went to Hollywood, and Saved Civilization” is the full title. Admittedly, I picked it up for the title and the cover art (very original). And on the cover, Neil Gaiman is quoted, “What Pinkwater does is magic.” Okay. If Mr. Book of Magic is saying what Pinkwater does is magic, I gotta read it.

Gaiman is correct. Lovely dialogue, once it gets going. Conversational narrative. Pinkwater links the story through the serendipitous re-appearance of several characters (always nice when that happens), and, the end? It was magic. Poetic. And then it was the end. Blunt. I wasn’t sure if it was brilliant or stunted.

Would I read another? Definitely. Now? I’ll wait a bit.
